In this story, Maya, an English speaker learning Hebrew, accidentally tells her new Israeli colleagues she is pregnant instead of saying she is tired, and has to explain the mix-up.

maya מאיה lamda למדה ivrit עברית kvar כבר shana שנה ‎, u've'derech ובדרך klal כלל hi היא histadra הסתדרה be'seder בסדר

Maya had been learning Hebrew for a year already, and usually she managed just fine.

aval אבל yom יום echad אחד ba'avoda בעבודה hi היא asta עשתה ta'ut טעות she'hi שהיא lo לא shachcha שכחה

But one day at work she made a mistake she didn't forget.

הַמְּדִינָה נִמְצֵאת בְּמֶרְכַּז הָאָרֶץ וְיֵשׁ בָּהּ הַרְבֵּה מְקוֹמוֹת יָפִים ‎. .

The country is located in the center of the land and has many beautiful places.

בַּבֹּקֶר הָלַכְנוּ לַשּׁוּק הַגָּדוֹל וְקָנִינוּ פֵּרוֹת טְרִיִּים ‎. .

In the morning we went to the big market and bought fresh fruit.

אַחֲרֵי הַצָּהֳרַיִם יָשַׁבְנוּ בַּגִּנָּה וְדִבַּרְנוּ עַל הַחַיִּים ‎. .

In the afternoon we sat in the garden and talked about life.

הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ שָׁקְעָה לְאַט וְהָרוּחַ נָשְׁבָה בְּעַדְנוּת ‎. .

The sun set slowly and the wind blew gently.
